How to get into Google AI results: AI Overviews and AI Mode
You cannot get into Google’s AI results by “connecting” a separate setting. Google does not offer special markup, file, or application for AI Overviews and AI Mode. A page can be used for AI features if it is indexable, eligible for a regular search snippet, and meets Google Search's basic quality requirements.
Therefore, the right question is not “how to deceive AI search results,” but “which pages Google can confidently use as a source for an answer.” This article contains a practical plan: what to check technically, how to organize the content, where to build evidence and what metrics to measure the work.
Article focus: step-by-step preparation of the site specifically for Google AI Overviews and AI Mode. For a selection of AEO, GEO and AI SEO terms, go to separate analysis of strategy, and working with ChatGPT Search and Yandex Neuro - to guide for the service website.
What Google considers AI results
In Google Search, AI features include AI Overviews and AI Mode. They do not replace the main search and do not work for every request. For a complex question, the system can decompose the problem into several related searches, select sources and collect an answer. Google calls this approach query fan-out.
There are two conclusions from this:
- One strong page is useful, but often not enough: an AI response can draw on different subtopics.
- It is not the “longest text” that wins, but the material that covers a specific part of the task better and more understandably than others.
For example, the query “how to choose a CRM for the sales department” can be divided into a comparison of ready-made systems, signs of the need for a custom CRM, data migration, integration with 1C and estimation of deadlines. A page that honestly addresses one of these aspects can be more useful than a general advertising landing page.
Basic conditions: without them, work will not begin
Before improving texts, check whether the important page is accessible to Google itself.
| Check | What should be | What risk does it remove? |
|---|---|---|
| HTTP response | The page gives 200 OK, and old addresses lead to a 301 redirect to a relevant replacement |
Google can't use broken or intermediate URLs |
| Indexing | No noindex, robots.txt and CDN do not block Googlebot |
The page exists for the visitor, but is not found in search |
| Canonical | The canonical URL points to the page itself or a deliberately chosen major version | Signals and links don't fall apart between takes |
| Snippet | Content is not closed nosnippet, max-snippet:0 or similar restrictions |
URL may not be included in Google's AI features |
| Main content | The important answer is in the HTML and not hidden behind complex client rendering | It's harder for search to extract meaning and check the page |
| Media | Images and videos really explain the topic and have clear context | AI response lacks visual confirmation |
Google recommends the same fundamental practices for AI features as for regular search: crawl accessibility, quality content, clear internal navigation, and a good user experience. If the technical base is not ready, do not start with the implementation of “AI SEO plugins”.
How to create a page you can trust
The AI mode doesn't read text the same way as a human, but it doesn't look for magical "quotable paragraphs" either. He needs a source that helps answer part of the question. A convenient structure makes this easier.
1. Give a direct answer in the first 50-100 words of the section.
Start each important section with a conclusion. Then expand the conditions, exceptions, table, process, and example.
Bad:
In the modern world, business process automation is becoming increasingly important.
Better:
Custom CRM is needed when a ready-made system forces the sales department to change the workflow, does not support critical integrations, or does not allow control over data and roles. Before development, it is worth describing the funnel, data sources and employee scenarios.
The second option has an object, decision criteria and the next step. It is easier to evaluate for both the person and the search.
2. Show the limits of applicability
A strong source not only gives advice, but also explains when advice is not appropriate. For example, in a CRM migration piece, indicate when CSV import is sufficient and when an integration layer and step-by-step data reconciliation is required.
Such restrictions increase practical value and reduce the risk that the user will receive an answer that is too general.
3. Confirm facts, don’t feign expertise.
If the text contains statistics, platform rules, legal requirements, or comparisons of solutions, place a link to the original source next to the statement. If you are describing your own experience, tie it to a real case and do not invent universal growth percentages.
For example, on a commercial page, you can link an explanation to the page CRM development, and the proof is with the case CRM for SPA and online booking. This makes it clearer to the search engine and the client that behind the competency there is real work.
4. Choose a format based on the user’s task
| Intent | Page Format | What should be inside |
|---|---|---|
| “What is it and who is it suitable for?” | Boarding services or review | Definition, Scenarios, Constraints, Stages, CTA |
| "How to" | Step by step article | Procedure, readiness criteria, errors |
| "What to choose" | Comparison | General criteria, table, recommendations for different conditions |
| “How much does it cost and how long does it last?” | Guide or block on the service | Ranges, assessment factors, scope of work, which affects the deadline |
| “Can the performer be trusted?” | Case | Problem, constraints, solution, stack, result without unverifiable promises |
One material should not try to cover all these intents at the same time. It is better to link several pages with internal links.
Why clusters are more important than a single article
Google explains that AI Mode can perform multiple related searches for a single complex query. This does not mean that you need to clone materials for each variant of the key phrase. This means that the site must cover the topic at different levels.
For a CRM theme, the cluster might look like this:
Разработка CRM
-> когда нужна кастомная CRM
-> миграция из Excel, amoCRM или Битрикс24
-> CRM для отдела продаж / сервиса / недвижимости
-> интеграции с 1С, ERP и телефонией
-> кейсы внедренияEach page has its own intent, and the links explain the route. This is more useful than a dozen articles with the same introductory paragraph about the importance of automation.
If you're just starting out, take one service, 3-5 most common client questions and 1-2 relevant cases. Link them, check indexing, then expand the cluster based on demand data and Search Console.
What to do with schema.org, FAQ and llms.txt
These elements are often sold as a “ticket to AI search results.” This is not true.
Schema.org
Google does not require special schema markup for AI Overviews or AI Mode. But correct Article, Service, Organization, Person, BreadcrumbList and other types help search understand the entities on the site. The main rule: the markup must match what the visitor actually sees on the page.
FAQ
An FAQ is useful if it answers real questions before purchasing or implementing. Don't add dozens of formal questions for the sake of space. It’s better to have 4-6 specific answers with conditions and a link to detailed material where appropriate.
llms.txt
For Google Search, this file is not a mechanism for participating in AI functions. The official Google guide says that llms.txt not used. It may not be a priority until technical indexing, content, and evidence are addressed.
What won't work or creates a risk
- Promise “will display in AI Overviews in N days”: Google does not guarantee display and does not use AI functions for every request.
- Special “AI text” with spam of terms: Google advises against rewriting content for the sake of fictitious optimization.
- Splitting one full-fledged article into many short pages without independent value.
- Hidden or inconsistent markup.
- Outdated data without date or source.
- Publishing similar articles under different keywords: they begin to compete with each other, rather than strengthen the topic.
Also, don't confuse visibility in Google's AI features with content visibility in other Google products. Management Google-Extended is not a way to turn Google Search AI features on or off.
Work plan for 30 days
Week 1: technical minimum
- Check important URLs for
200 OK, canonical, indexability and presence in sitemap. - Make sure robots.txt, CDN and WAF are not blocking Googlebot.
- Check title, description, one H1 and main text display without JavaScript errors.
Week 2: two key landings
- Formulate the main intent and direct response for each service.
- Add scenarios, constraints, steps, proofs and a clear CTA.
- Link landing pages to relevant cases and articles.
Week 3: Expert Content
- Gather questions from sales, support, and customers.
- Release 2-3 articles, each of which answers one problem.
- Add primary sources to changing regulations, studies and figures.
Week 4: Measurement and Refinement
- Check impressions, CTR and requests for updated URLs.
- Find pages with high impressions and low CTR - they usually need a more accurate title and description.
- Track applications, case conversions, and brand demand, not just positions.
How to measure results without illusions
An AI response can give the user knowledge without going to the site, so CTR alone doesn't tell the whole story. In the link, see:
- dynamics of impressions, clicks and requests in Search Console;
- visibility of priority boarding by clusters;
- transitions from AI services if they transmit referrer;
- growth in brand requests and direct visits;
- applications, calls and further conversion to CRM.
Google recommends analyzing AI visibility through Search Console reports. If a separate Generative AI report is available in your account, use it in conjunction with the regular Web report. Manual review of responses is useful as a qualitative study, but should not be the only KPI: the composition of the AI response varies depending on the question, region and time.
FAQ
Do I need a separate Google application to be included in AI Overviews?
No. There is no separate application. The page must be indexed, accessible by Google, and suitable for a regular search snippet.
Does ranking first on Google guarantee an AI answer?
No. AI functions can use several sources, and for some queries they may not appear at all. Good organic visibility remains important, but does not equal a guaranteed quote.
Do I need to rewrite my entire website for AI SEO?
No. Start with important sales pages, legacy traffic content, and questions customers are already asking. Quality and consistency are more important than mass processing.
What is more important: schema.org or useful text?
Useful, accessible and verifiable text. Schema helps clarify the structure, but does not replace the answer to the user's question and is not a Google specific requirement for AI functions.
