AEO, GEO and AI SEO: how to choose a strategy for AI search
The terms AEO, GEO and AI SEO are often used interchangeably. Because of this, businesses are offered “optimization for neural networks” without a clear result, and the site team finds it difficult to decide what exactly to do: change robots.txt, write a FAQ, buy mentions, or redo landing pages.
It is more correct to consider them different levels of one task: to make the company and its materials noticeable where the user receives an answer not only from a list of links, but also in the AI interface. This could be Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT Search, Yandex or another search assistant.
Article focus: understand the terms and choose a business strategy. There is no complete technical checklist of Google AI Mode and the ChatGPT Search setup is not discussed here: these scenarios are included in practical plan for Google and service website guide.
Major disclaimer: AEO, GEO and AI SEO are industry terms, not Google algorithm names. There is no individual button, markup, or file that is guaranteed to appear in a generative response. B Google documentation It is explicitly stated that AI functions do not require special requirements beyond an indexable page suitable for a regular snippet and quality content.
Briefly: what is the difference between AEO, GEO and AI SEO
| Approach | Which question does it answer? | Bottom Line |
|---|---|---|
| SEO | How to get organic visibility and conversions from search? | Indexed landing pages, articles, technical base, demand and conversion |
| AEO | How to give the user an accurate answer to a specific question? | Clear answer blocks, instructions, comparisons, conditions and restrictions |
| GEO | How can you make your brand and materials usable in a generative response? | Verifiable facts, authorship, sources, entities, reputational trail |
| AI SEO | How to combine SEO, AEO and GEO into real AI channels? | Content cluster, correct indexing, analytics and route to the application |
AEO: Answer Engine Optimization
AEO is working with questions to which the user expects a ready answer. For example: “when does a business need a custom CRM”, “how to transfer data from Excel to CRM” or “how long does an SEO audit of a website take”.
A good AEO block does not repeat the key phrase. He first answers directly, then explains the conditions, restrictions and the next step. The reader benefits without unnecessary searching, and the search engine sees an independent semantic fragment.
Example structure:
Вопрос -> короткий вывод -> когда это верно -> исключения -> ссылка на подробное решениеGEO: Generative Engine Optimization
GEO is wider than AEO. Its purpose is for the generative system to correctly associate the answer with your company, expert, product or research. For this, not only the texts on the site are important, but also confirmation: the author’s profile, clear service pages, cases, primary sources for figures, a single brand name and real external mentions.
GEO does not mean “write a neural network style article.” On the contrary, Google recommends not changing content for the sake of some special AI format: useful original material that actually solves the user’s problem is more important. Details on how to apply this specifically to Google have been collected in a separate material: how to get into Google AI results.
AI SEO: A Working Framework for Business
AI SEO is convenient to use as an umbrella concept. It includes:
- technical accessibility of the site for search;
- pages of services and solutions with clear commercial intentions;
- articles that answer questions before purchasing;
- authors, cases, sources and evidence of experience;
- internal linking between service, explanation and example of work;
- Measuring not only clicks, but also visibility, brand demand and applications.
For a service website, this is especially important: the user can first ask the AI search about a way to solve a problem, then check the company by brand, study the case, and only then leave a request.
What to change on the site first
Don't start by adding FAQs or artificial "AI keys" in bulk. First, assemble the base.
1. Record what problem each page solves
One page should have one main intent. The landing explains the service and working conditions, the case proves experience, the article answers the question, and the guide connects several topics. If one piece of content simultaneously tries to sell CRM development, explain RAG, compare platforms, and collect all the clues, it is harder for both humans and search to understand.
2. Make the answer visible at the beginning of the section
The subtitle should promise a specific question, and the first paragraph should answer it. You can then expand on details, scenarios, risks, a table, or an example. This order is more useful than a long introduction with general words about the importance of technology.
3. Support strong statements.
If you mention a deadline, percentage, platform requirements, or research results, indicate the source next to the statement. If this is your experience, describe the context: what the project was, what exactly was measured and under what conditions the results were obtained.
You should not attribute numbers to the case that are not agreed upon with the client. In such situations, it is better to show the process, stack, limitations and solved business problem.
4. Link materials into a route rather than random links
The working link for a commercial theme looks like this:
Вопрос пользователя -> подробная статья -> посадочная услуги -> релевантный кейс -> заявка или технический разборFor example, an article about choosing a CRM should lead to CRM development, then to the case CRM for SPA and online booking. This way the visitor sees both the methodology and proof of real experience.
5. Separate useful structure from SEO decorations
Schema.org, FAQ, tables and images are needed to help the user understand. They do not replace content. Google specifically warns: structured data must match visible text, and AI functions do not require special schema markup.
How not to confuse strategy and tactics
| If the task | Basic approach | What to do first |
|---|---|---|
| Get more clicks on services | SEO | Check demand, landing, indexing, title, H1 and conversion |
| Answer questions before purchasing | AEO | Collect client questions and create independent response blocks |
| Get into mentions and sources of AI responses | GEO | Strengthen facts, authorship, cases, brand entities and external confirmations |
| Set up the entire system | AI SEO | Connect SEO, AEO and GEO into a content cluster with measurable KPIs |
What not to do for AI search
- create
llms.txtin hopes of getting featured in Google AI Overviews: Google does not use this file for search functions; - splitting one good material into dozens of short “chunks” without any independent benefit;
- add FAQ and schema to the text where there are no real questions and answers;
- rewrite each page to a template “neural network style”;
- buy fake reviews, mentions or links;
- promise to hit a specific AI response as a guaranteed KPI.
Instead, develop the topic sequentially. Useful for general site audit analysis of AI SEO for a service website, and to assess commercial visibility - SEO promotion NBM-IT. If the task is limited to Yandex and Search with Neuro, use a separate service neuropromotion in Yandex, and do not mix this intention with the general guide to AEO and GEO.
How to measure progress
AI visibility cannot be measured by a single metric. Track:
- Impressions, CTR and requests for key URLs in Google Search Console and Yandex Webmaster.
- Increase in brand requests and direct visits after publications.
- Transitions from AI referrals where the system transmits referrer.
- Applications, calls and transitions to CRM, not just positions.
- Quality of responses to selected scenarios: manual review is needed as a study, but not as the only KPI.
If a separate generative AI feature report is available in Search Console, use it as an additional slice. However, do not draw conclusions from one answer or one day: the search results are influenced by intent, region, personalization, freshness and composition of sources.
FAQ
Are AEO and GEO replacing classic SEO?
No. They build on top of it. If a page doesn't index, doesn't respond well to the main query, or doesn't help the user, special "AI optimization" won't fix the problem.
Do I need separate markup for AI Overviews?
No. Google does not require any special markup to participate in AI Overviews or AI Mode. A correct schema can help search understand a page, but it must reflect the visible content.
Is it possible to guarantee getting into an AI response?
No. AI functions do not appear for all queries, and the set of sources depends on the specific question. The correct KPI is an increase in high-quality search visibility and targeted actions, and not the promise of one quote.
Where to start if there are few resources?
Select one commercially important service, one relevant case study and 3-5 customer questions. Check accessibility, rewrite first answer blocks, add evidence, and link pages internally.
